Electric Power System in India
India’s electric power system is the third-largest producer and consumer of electricity globally. Overseen primarily by the Ministry of Power, the network has transitioned from experiencing deep power shortages to operating with a 0% deficit and managing an all-India installed capacity of over 548 GW. Power generation mix
Electricity generation relies on a diverse basket of thermal, nuclear, and rapidly expanding renewable energy sources. [7]
- Thermal power: Comprising coal, gas, and oil, thermal plants remain the primary baseline source, contributing over 251 GW of total capacity. Coal alone satisfies the majority of baseline grid demand. [5, 7, 8, 9]
- Renewable energy sources: Driven by massive deployments of solar and wind energy, renewables (excluding large hydro) represent the fastest-growing vertical with over 236 GW installed. India aims to achieve 500 GW of non-fossil fuel capacity by 2030. [7, 8, 9, 10, 11]
- Hydroelectric power: Large hydro installations contribute roughly 52 GW to the national framework, acting as crucial stabilizers for peak load management. [8, 12, 13, 14]

Grid transmission
The high-voltage transmission architecture enables cross-country power transfers through a unified network. [16, 17]
- National Grid: India operates one of the largest single synchronous grids globally, allowing power generated in any region to serve demand elsewhere across the country. [17]
- Voltage tiers: Power moves via ultra-high voltage networks, including 765 kV, 400 kV, and 220 kV lines. [16]
- System operators: The physical infrastructure is maintained by the state-owned Power Grid Corporation of India, while real-time supply-demand monitoring is handled by the Grid Controller of India (formerly POSOCO). [17, 18, 19]
- International ties: The grid maintains active synchronous interconnections with Bhutan, and asynchronous links with Nepal and Bangladesh to facilitate regional energy trade. [17]
Distribution segment
Distribution acts as the retail arm of the power ecosystem, bringing electricity directly to consumers. [5, 20, 21]
- DISCOMs: Power distribution is run primarily by state-owned Distribution Companies (DISCOMs), alongside a few privatized utilities operating in major urban metros.
- Operational reforms: Initiatives like the Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme (RDSS) focus on implementing nationwide smart metering and reducing aggregate technical and commercial (AT&C) financial losses.
- Village electrification: Robust structural investments have achieved near-universal household connectivity, linking over 2.86 crore households across thousands of rural villages. [5, 8, 22, 23, 24]
